A sedentary lifestyle in older women ages their body cells, research suggests. It has been reported that women who have an inactive lifestyle have faster-ageing cells than women who exercise everyday. Women who lead a sedentary lifestyle have faster-ageing cells than those who exercise every day, research suggests.  1,500 women aged 64 to 95 participated in research that found those who spent the majority of their day sitting and exercised for less than 40 minutes a day had cells that were biologically eight years older. Elderly people who exercise ‘live five years longer’

Studies last year found regular exercise in old age has as powerful an effect on life expectancy as giving up smoking. The analysis of 5,700 elderly men in Norway showed those doing three hours of exercise a week lived around five years longer than the sedentary. Jean Dawson says it’s yoga, which she started aged 67, that’s helped her to reach her 100th birthday!

Jean first started yoga after seeing an advert in her local area. She credits yoga with changing her life, saying that it has “helped cure aches and pains.” Aside from easing pain, Jean also says the yoga has helped her posture, balance, concentration, flexibility and stamina. Attending regular classes also means Jean has made some great friends. According to Jean’s yoga instructor, Christine, Jean is a role model for others – proving to everyone that if she can do it, so can they.
