Beat the cold- #WarmChallenge

February 26, 2018 5:03 pm

As you have probably felt, the weather is plummeting down to below freezing temperature this week. You will leave your house and as your fingers go numb and the moisture in your eyes freezes over, you will think of nothing else but getting back inside with the warmth of the heating to slowly melt your frozen toes back to normal. So, let us ask you this- Will you think about your elderly loved ones or neighbours? It is so important that you do. Older people are more at risk because their bodies often struggle to adjust to the temperature change. Cold weather also increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke as well as serious illnesses such as flu...

How Will You Spend Your February 13th?

February 12, 2018 10:03 am

Tomorrow is Pancake Day- YAY! How will you spend your February 13th? Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). Whether you are celebrating for Lent, keeping up with family traditions or just want an excuse to eat delicious food, it is a great opportunity to take advantage of Pancake Day to spend time with family members and all make pancakes together. Pancake Day can be super fun and family inclusive – being the person to flip them...

Marriage could lower the risk of dementia

November 29, 2017 4:01 pm

A new study posted in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry found that marriage could in fact lower the risk of developing dementia. Combined results of 15 studies with data including 800,000 participants, finds that people who remain single are at a greater risk of developing dementia than people who are married by 42%. Widowers were 20% more likely to develop the condition. The risk of dementia between those who were married and divorced showed no difference. It’s important to note that these findings are based only on observational studies and no firm conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn. However, it is suggested by the researchers that marriage may help both partners to have healthier lifestyles, including exercising more, eating a healthy diet, and...

July 18, 2017 3:20 pm

Citric acid contains the chemical nobiletin which, in animal tests, has been shown to slow or reverse impairment of memory. However this new research – published in the British Journal of Nutrition – is the first major study to investigate the effect citrus fruit consumption might have on large numbers of those most at risk. Scientists tracked more than 13,000 middle-aged or...
